Damian Boyd will be our guest on June 11th as The Richland Academy hosts “2d Wednesdays” With “Bob Cox and Friends”
We will be hosting a “Ballroom Dance Night” in the Discovery Center from 7 to 9 PM. So come on down to our “air conditioned ballroom” and bring a partner or come alone and find one there! You don’t want to miss the month’s performance!
Joining us this month will be trombonist Damian Boyd. Damian picked up the trombone at age 10 at the suggestion of his grandfather. After a year in the school band at Lexington, he began playing with Frank Gfrer’s Concert Band (a community band comprised of adults with a passion for music). Their passion for music rubbed off on him as he would soon begin to study with his mentor, accomplished trombonist Richard Johnson. Damian continued to study with Mr. Johnson through high school which would lead him to meet and study jazz improvisation with Doctor Tom Croghan at the Richland Academy of the Arts. In high school Damian performed with many honors groups including the Ohio All Sate Band and played lead trombone with the Ohio All State Jazz Ensemble. Awards won include the Woody Herman Jazz Award, The John Phillip Sousa Band Award and the Louis Armstrong Award.
After graduating high school Damian studied with Professor Bryan Schultz at the University of Toledo with a concentration in Music Theory and Trombone Performance. While at Toledo he performed with many ensembles including lead trombone in the Jazz Orchestra. After a year he transferred to the Ohio State University to concentrate as a Jazz Studies Major under Professor James Masters. While at OSU Damian performed with many of the universities ensembles including the OSU Jazz Ensemble (the Jazz Studies Department’s top performing ensemble). As a performing professional Damian has worked with many of Ohio’s finest musicians including Gene Walker, Dave Powers, Doctor Tom Croghan and the legendary Hank Marr.
Damian is currently on faculty as the brass instructor at the Richland Academy of the Arts and tunes pianos for his friends and principal piano tuners Roy Nieman and Robert Noble.
Damian receives support and continued encouragement from his wife of over 4 years, Vicky. The couple now live in nearby Caledonia, Ohio.
Damian will be joining our regulars Dane Noe, on keyboard, Henry Van Buren, on sax and vibes, Dan Conwell, on bass and Bob Cox on guitar. Jim Smith from Mansfield will also be joining us on drums this month.
